Jammu and Kashmir: SIA seals assets worth crores of Jamaat-e-Islami

The Jammu and Kashmir State Investigation Agency (SIA) on Saturday sealed several properties worth crores of rupees belonging to the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI) in the Union Territory. Access and use of about a dozen properties worth about Rs 100 crore were banned in Baramulla, Bandipora, Ganderbal and Kupwara districts, he said.

Officials said the properties were frozen after being notified by the district magistrates of Baramulla, Bandipora, Ganderbal and Kupwara on the recommendation of the SIA. He said the move is aimed at stopping the availability of funds for separatist activities and dismantling the ecosystem of anti-national elements and terror networks hostile to India’s sovereignty.

The officials said that these premises/structures were cordoned off and access and use were restricted. Also, they have been given a “red entry” in the relevant revenue records. He said that during the seizure proceedings, it was found that around two dozen commercial establishments in the towns of Kupwara and Kangan (in Ganderbal) were currently running on rental basis from JEI properties.

Officials said that after a thorough investigation, it was decided to allow these to continue so that private individuals who have no connection with JEI and are mere tenants paying rent to JEI are not penalized and their livelihood is protected. Don’t be impressed He said that these properties are the third set of properties to be notified in the series of properties belonging to JEI.

“The action will eliminate the menace of terror financing to a great extent in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as a step to ensure the rule of law and a society without fear,” he said. The SIA identified 188 JEI properties across the Union Territory which have either been notified or are in the process of being notified for further legal action. Officials said that these are the result of the investigation of FIR No. 17 of 2019 u/s 10, 11 and 13 of Police Station Batamalu, being probed by the agency.
